“The police are ready to maintain public order and that of their safety during the Kuala Terengganu by-election,” he told reporters.
Polling is on Jan 17 and an intense all-out campaign is expected to be waged by main protagonists - Pakatan Rakyat and Barisan Nasional.
The by-election is seen as a crucial test of Deputy Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s leadership over the Malay community. Najib is the incoming Umno president and is due to take over from Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in March.
Jalaluddin said police personnel would be stationed in Wakaf Mempelam, Ladang, Bandar and Batu Burok - the four state constituencies that come under the umbrella of the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary seat.
Police will be on duty on nomination day, during the campaign period, and on polling day, he added.
